Grumble Jones |
In 2002 I became interested in the history of the American Civil War and a year later one man in particular. Sitting with friends at a campsite at Gettysburg, Lee Houser of the Civil War Heritage Foundation, a living history group, looked at me and said, "Grumble Jones." I admit that I had no idea what he was talking about but did some research later and found that I bear some resemblance to General Jones. Since that trip I have visited the battlefield six times, most recently this year for the anniversary. I became interested in W.E. (Grumble) Jones and am excited about plans to portray him in Living History with the Civil War Heritage Foundation. The most important thing I've learned about the war was on a tour with Wayne Wachsmuth, 'The ground drives the battle.' - It seems obvious but comes to life when walking the field. The most important thing I've learned about history, "Remember the valiant who stepped up when called. If we don't do it, who will?" "I'm especially appreciative of all the help I've gotten from Military History Online and Civil War Heritage Foundation members, who gave me the e-ticket tour of Gettysburg for my first visit. Since that trip I've been back to Gettysburg a number of times and always am looking forward to my next trip. I was born and raised in Chicago and currently work at Kansas State University managing hazardous materials. On retiring I hope to relocate to Pennsylvania near my daughter and her family just east of Gettysburg. I enjoy road trips several times a year and besides the Civil War, list trains and jam bands as interests. I look forward to visiting Strausburg this summer with my 4 year old grandson who is a "real train nut." I have only been studying the Civil War for a few years so I ask "my share of dumb questions." |
